New train connection for employees at Gigafactory Grünheide near Berlin

New train connection for employees at Gigafactory Grünheide near Berlin

Following the ceremonial opening of the long-awaited train station at Gigafactory Grünheide last year, another train will soon be running directly from Berlin to the Gigafactory. According to the Brandenburg Infrastructure Minister, the train will start operating in April and will run in addition to the train that already travels to Giga Berlin. With the new connection, Giga Berlin can be reached in just 40 minutes. The trains for Tesla employees will run from Berlin-Lichtenberg to Tesla-Süd station from April 1, 2024. This was announced by Brandenburg's Infrastructure Minister Rainer Genilke last Thursday in the transport committee of the Brandenburg state parliament and gave further details, as reported by RBB. The route will probably run via the Biesdorfer Kreuz junction with a stop in Erkner, said Genilke. It would start early in the morning to bring employees to the early shift. "This is primarily planned for the early shift. As we have now learned, the train is scheduled to leave Berlin-Lichtenberg at 5.01 a.m. and arrive at the Tesla Süd site at 5.41 a.m.," said the minister. The rail connection is part of the timetable coordination between Tesla and DB Netz AG as the operator of the rail infrastructure. The state is not involved in this, said Genilke. The new connection had been ordered and financed by Tesla. According to the company, the additional service will also be available to all other passengers free of charge. It will also be much more convenient for some local residents, as they will also be able to travel on the new train free of charge.

According to Tesla, it currently employs around 12,000 people at the Gigafactory Grünheide near Berlin. Most of them come from Berlin. The expansion of the connections to Berlin is therefore an important contribution to relieving the roads around the factory site and reducing the environmental impact of car traffic. "The direct connection to Berlin has the greatest positive effect on the development of local public transport and the reduction of traffic jams around the factory," Tesla previously said.
