As Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs Jürgen Steinbach has now announced, electric carmaker Tesla has partially commissioned the battery factory at its Gigafactory Grünheide. For the time being, only individual battery components are to be produced here. Contrary to original plans, Tesla has relocated further production steps to the USA for the time being because the entrepreneurial conditions there are more favorable due to tax incentives. Nevertheless, battery production in Germany is to be further expanded in the future. In the future, the new 4680 battery cells that have already been announced are to be manufactured in the production facility.
As Economics Minister Steinbach told the RBB the building on the railing of the Gigafactory Grünheide is humming. "The building is humming, it's full," Steinbach said in an interview with rbb. What's important is the manufacturing stage to which the battery parts will be completed, Steinbach added. And that's already well advanced, the economics minister said: "What's being manufactured there as a preliminary product at that point completely loads that building at that point."
Exactly which parts are currently being produced in Grünheide is still unclear. Tesla is also not giving any precise information about this at the moment and continues to keep a low profile. One possibility could be that Tesla has cells produced in the USA and the battery pack is assembled in Grünheide for finished production.
