Every year, the Norwegian Automobile Club tests NAF (Norges Automobil Forbund) electric cars under real winter conditions. In the so-called El Prix-test, numerous electric vehicles are tested on the same route and at identical temperatures to determine their range in winter with the official WLTP specifications to compare.
This year, the Polestar 3 with the smallest deviation of only 5 % the best result. Surprisingly, however, the Tesla Model 3 with 531 km the highest range - despite a high WLTP deviation of 24 %.
How did the media report on the result?
While some media such as T-Online and Die Welt the Model 3 described it as a disappointment because it had the largest percentage deviation from the WLTP specification, they failed to mention an important point: The Tesla Model 3 nevertheless achieved one of the highest ranges of all vehicles tested in real winter operation.
This negative interpretation distorts the overall picture. Much more relevant is the fact that Tesla continues to lead the field when it comes to absolute winter range. The Model 3 offered more real-world range than many competitors with significantly lower WLTP deviations.
Why does the winter range deviate from the WLTP value?
The WLTP measurement is carried out under idealized conditions with 23 degrees Celsiuswithout heating or air conditioning. Since winter temperatures, road conditions and additional consumers such as heating, ventilation and lighting influence the range, real values are often lower.
Tesla already relies on advanced thermal management and continuously improves with software updates the winter efficiency of its vehicles.
Conclusion: Tesla remains the leader in winter range
The El Prix 2025 shows: TeslaVehicles offer one of the highest ranges even under real-life conditions. While media reports interpret a high WLTP deviation as negative, what counts for drivers above all is the actual rangeand here remains Tesla with the Model 3 remains at the forefront.
