Tesla tests Supercharger queue for relaxed charging

Disturbing queues at the Supercharger will soon be a thing of the past: With the virtual Supercharger queue, Tesla is starting internal tests to assign you a digital spot in the charging queue. This way, you can relax and grab a coffee or check emails instead of waiting next to your car. Public pilot trials will follow in the next step - we show you how the system works and what advantages it brings.

How the virtual queue works

When heading to a heavily frequented Supercharger, your Tesla automatically places you in the digital queue - without any stress:

  1. Automatic entry into the queue as soon as you reach the geofence

  2. Position & wait time are displayed on the vehicle display and in the app

  3. Notification as soon as a charging spot is free, with a short deadline to drive in

On the iOS lock screen, you can use the Live Activity to keep an eye on your position in the queue.

Integration into the vehicle and the app

Tesla relies on two seamless implementations:

  • In-Car UI: You see progress, estimated wait time, and instructions to the next free stall directly in the cockpit.

  • Tesla App: Even non-Tesla drivers benefit through the app - for example, at Magic Docks stations that are opened for all brands.

Technology against queue exploitation

To keep the virtual queue fair, Tesla uses:

  • GPS geofencing to allow only cars present on-site

  • Countdown timer that sets short deadlines to avoid placeholders

  • Lockout mechanisms that prevent repeated queue skipping

This ensures that only actual arrivals charge, not remote-controlled "ghost drivers."

Outlook on public pilot trials

After completing internal tests, Tesla will soon launch public pilots – expected at particularly busy locations along California highways and vacation routes. There, the team collects valuable data to optimally align the system with various usage scenarios.

Why virtual queues are a game changer

  • Stress-free charging breaks: No annoying re-parking or constant checking of the battery level.

  • Better time management: Enjoy a break without fear of losing your charging spot.

  • Scalability: Whether Tesla or third-party drivers – everyone benefits from regulated processes.

Especially in large metropolises like New York, Detroit, or Toronto – where Superchargers are scarce – the virtual queue provides noticeably more comfort.

Conclusion
With the virtual Supercharger queue, Tesla makes fast charging even more user-friendly. After internal tests and upcoming public pilot projects, we can look forward to relaxed charging breaks – completely without stress and hassle.
