Tesla Shanghai Megafactory manufactures 1,000 Megapack – Delivery goes to Europe

Tesla has reached an important milestone at its Megafactory in Shanghai: This week, the 1,000th Megapack rolled off the assembly line. The unit will be shipped to Europe and demonstrates how quickly Tesla is ramping up the production of its energy storage solutions in China.

From construction start to mass production in record time

Construction of the Megafactory began on May 23, 2024, marking Tesla's first energy storage project outside the USA. The factory was completed in just nine months and officially started production on February 11, 2025 – similar to the Tesla Gigafactories, which were also built in record time.

Rapid production ramp-up

That the 1,000th Megapack was produced in less than six months illustrates the high manufacturing speed. On average, over 188 units have been produced per month since production started. Since production lines typically require a ramp-up period in the initial phase, the current production rate is likely significantly higher by now.

In the long term, Tesla plans to manufacture up to 10,000 Megapacks per year in Shanghai – equivalent to around 40 GWh of storage capacity. This could, for example, supply 50,000 households in Shanghai with electricity for one year.

What is a Megapack?

The Tesla Megapack is a large-scale energy storage solution for commercial use. It stabilizes power grids, stores excess energy from renewable sources, and protects against power outages.

Each Megapack stores around 3,900 kWh – comparable to the battery capacity of about 62 Tesla Model 3 RWD.

Global production network is growing

In addition to the facility in Shanghai, Tesla already operates a Megafactory in Lathrop, California with the same annual capacity. Another plant is also currently being built in Waller County, Texas, which is intended to further secure the global supply of Megapacks.

Conclusion: With the rapid production in Shanghai, Tesla is making a clear statement about the growing importance of energy storage solutions. The success of the location could help meet demand in Europe more quickly and accelerate the expansion of renewable energies.
