Tesla Robotaxi: New FSD features show how close fully autonomous driving is

Tesla has launched the paid robotaxi service in Austin – presenting the most advanced version of its "Full Self-Driving" to date. For us European Tesla fans, the new features are interesting to observe for now, but they provide a clear outlook on what could arrive with future FSD updates here.

Immediate Blue Light Detection

One of the highlights: The Tesla robotaxi software reliably detects emergency vehicles based on sirens and light signals, autonomously blinks, pulls over to the right in a controlled manner, and lets the ambulance pass. This is more than just object detection – this involves situation-dependent "reasoning," which will be essential for the approval of autonomous driving functions in Europe.

Automatic Camera Cleaning

Instead of running countless wiper cycles, the robotaxi sprays cleaning fluid in front of the main cameras and wipes this spot multiple times. The sensors remain clear without service teams having to constantly make adjustments – a must for a 24/7 ride-hailing service.

U-Turn and Parking Garage Mastered Confidently

Currently, many FSD users in Germany still criticize hesitant behavior during tight turning maneuvers or in densely parked areas. The new robotaxi version executes U-turns smoothly, then changes lanes accurately and navigates complex parking areas much more safely. Local drivers are eagerly awaiting this.

Night Driving Almost Like Daylight

Tesla demonstrates that the purely camera-based approach is convincing even in darkness. Blinding headlights or missing street lighting hardly affect the driving strategy – according to test drivers, the night behavior differs only minimally from daytime driving.

Support at the Push of a Button

Two new touch buttons in the rear provide reassurance:

  • Call Support – Video contact with a Tesla operator if questions arise.

  • Pull Over – the vehicle searches for the next possible safe stopping point.
Both functions prompt with a pop-up to avoid accidental activations.

What FSD Customers in Europe Can Soon Expect

Tesla almost always introduces innovations first in the USA – but many components, such as the improved emergency service detection or the more precise parking lot routing, are already listed in the official "Upcoming Improvements" for FSD V13. This increases the chances that we will receive these features with one of the next over-the-air updates here.

Our Assessment

  • Safety Plus through blue light handling and pull-over function

  • Comfort Gain thanks to confident turning maneuvers and better night mode

  • Less Service Effort through targeted camera cleaning

Conclusion

The current robotaxi software demonstrates how quickly Tesla is evolving its FSD. Whether it's ambulance recognition or automatic camera cleaning: every improvement brings us a step closer to a fully autonomous driving experience – and at the same time shows what we can look forward to with the next major FSD roll-out in Europe.
