Police end month-long protest

On November 19, 2024, the police broke up the protest camp of the Tesla-opponents in Grünheide near Berlin. The reason for this was violations of public safety and order, the police announced. The camp, which had been occupied by environmental activists since February, was a symbol of resistance against the expansion of the Tesla-Gigafactory. The activists' aim was to draw attention to environmental concerns such as the threat to drinking water and deforestation.

Explosive ordnance search as a trigger

The police had already initiated initial measures to clear the site on Monday. The area of forest in question was to be searched for explosive ordnance from the Second World War in order to ensure the safety of the planned work. However, the activists refused to leave the restricted area. This led to an escalation in which height rescuers were also deployed to get people out of tree houses.

Protest continues

Despite the eviction, the resistance continues. Spokespersons for the activists criticize the measure as disproportionate and dangerous, especially due to the bad weather. Some of the squatters have announced that they will continue their protest in the form of demonstrations. A first action, a so-called "forest walk", is already planned for the coming weekend.

The role of politics: support for the police

Political representatives in Brandenburg welcome the measures taken by the police. SPD parliamentary group leader Daniel Keller made it clear that even protest camps are not a lawless area. CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann spoke of a necessary enforcement of law and order, as the activists had not been willing to cooperate.

Tesla's plans in Grünheide

Tesla plans to drastically increase production capacity in Grünheide. The aim is to double vehicle production to one million vehicles per year and expand battery production. However, critics see this as a threat to the environment and the local water supply.

Conclusion

The dissolution of the protest camp marks a turning point in the conflict between Tesla and environmental activists. While the authorities justify their actions, the future of the resistance remains uncertain. Tesla's Gigafactory remains at the center of attention - as a symbol of progress, but also as a point of contention.
