A larger wheelbase, a real third row of seats, and a new look: Tesla has unveiled the Tesla Model Y L in China – a long version of the bestseller with six seats. The official MIIT registration confirms the market launch for fall 2025. We show you what changes, how the Model Y L fits between Model Y and Model X, and why this variant is particularly exciting for families.
What makes the Tesla Model Y L special?
The biggest difference: a six-seat layout with two comfortable individual seats in the second row and a much more usable third row. This bridges the gap between the previous Model Y (optionally with a tight 7-seat bench) and the more expensive Model X.
Extended wheelbase – more compact than a Model X, but more space than in the Model Y
Tesla extends the Model Y L primarily behind the C-pillar. The result: more legroom in the rear without making the overall vehicle as large as a Model X.
Model |
Wheelbase |
Length |
---|---|---|
Model Y |
2,890 mm |
4,797 mm |
Model Y L |
3,040 mm |
4,976 mm |
Model X |
2,965 mm |
5,060 mm |
The wheelbase of the Tesla Model Y L is even longer than that of the Model X, although it remains shorter overall. A clever design: less "nose", more cabin length.

Price & Equipment: What to expect?
Official prices have not yet been announced by Tesla. As a reference: On the Model X, the jump from 5 to 6 seats costs around 6,500 US dollars extra. A similar surcharge could also be due for the Tesla Model Y L – plus additional costs for the extended bodywork. What is certain: The Model Y L will be above the regular Model Y AWD, but significantly below the Model X.

Why the Tesla Model Y L makes sense
-
Family-friendly: Finally enough space in the third row
-
More efficient than a Model X: Compact, lighter, LFP battery
-
China focus: Longer wheelbases are popular there, the variant fits perfectly with the market
Conclusion
The Tesla Model Y L brings more space and flexibility to the best-selling Tesla SUV - without advancing into the price and size region of the Model X. For China, this is a logical step. Whether Europe and North America will follow remains to be seen. For now, it means keeping an eye on the autumn launch - and hoping that Tesla will also roll out the long version to other markets.
