New Tesla Model Y will soon receive adaptive headlights in the USA

The new Tesla Model Y will be introduced in the coming months in the USA with adaptive headlights equipped. This confirmed Lars MoravyTesla's VP of Vehicle Engineering, in the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage.

Adaptive headlights soon to be available in the USA

The introduction of matrix headlights in the USA was delayed due to regulatory hurdles. First since mid-2024 have manufacturers been allowed to officially launch this technology on the US market.

🔹 Tesla plans to activate it within the next few months
🔹 Competitor models from Rivian and Mercedes-Benz already offer Matrix headlights
🔹 Matrix functionality reduces glare effects by selectively dimming individual light pixels

👉 It was surprising that Tesla adaptive lighting technology was not already integrated in the major Holiday Update 2024 has. However, it could soon via a software update be added soon.

Which Tesla-models will receive the new headlights?

Tesla has the exact technical implementation for the new Model Y has not been confirmed in detail, but some indications point to it:

🚘 The new Model Y has headlights that strongly resemble the Matrix headlights of the 2024+. Model 3 similar
🚘 It is unclear whether these are the exact same lights as on the Model 3 and Cybertruck
🚘 Older Tesla-models with Matrix headlights could receive the feature later via an update

How do adaptive headlights work?

In contrast to simple automatic high beamsthat alternate between switching on and off enable Matrix headlights on targeted dimming of individual light segments.

✔️ Automatically blocks out oncoming vehicles
✔️ Improves visibility on bends thanks to dynamic light distribution
✔️ Reduces the risk of glare for other road users
✔️ Optimizes lighting conditions in poor visibility

Conclusion: Adaptive headlights soon for Tesla Model Y - but still without a fixed date

The matrix technology offers considerable safety advantages and could be Tesla's NCAP rating even better. Since Tesla the hardware is already installedit will probably only be a matter of time before a software update unlocks the function.

It remains to be seen whether older Matrix headlights will be retrofitted can be upgraded or whether Tesla only newer models can be equipped with the function.
