Tesla has extended the estimated delivery times for the Model S and Model X in Europe. New orders now show a waiting time of 4 to 5 months, instead of the previously usual four weeks. With delivery dates stretching into July-August 2025, speculation is growing about an imminent refresh of these models.
Indications of an update
This pattern of longer delivery times ahead of major product refreshes is common for Tesla is not new. Last year, the delivery times of the Model 3 in several markets before the "Project Highland" refresh was officially launched. The situation was similar for the Model Y, whose waiting times in Europe increased by five months before reports confirmed an imminent refresh under the name "Project Juniper". Now the Model S and Model X appear to be following this trend. A similar scenario occurred at the end of 2020, shortly before Tesla the last refresh of these two flagship vehicles was announced.
Possible reasons for the extended delivery times
As the Model S and Model X are produced exclusively at the Fremont plant, it takes Tesla additional time to make necessary changes to the production lines. Shipping and logistics to bring the vehicles to Europe also require more time. Hopefully the transition will be smoother this time, as it took over two years for the vehicles to be available in Europe during the last refresh.
Confirmation of a refresh by Tesla
Lars Moravy, Tesla's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, recently hinted that an update for the Model S and Model X could come before the end of 2025. Although no specific details were given, the following improvements could be part of the refresh:
-
Updated interior materials and technology: Similar to those in the updated Model 3 and the upcoming Model Y update.
-
Increased efficiency and range: Possibly through the use of Tesla's latest battery technology.
-
Return of the turn signal lever: Analogous to the new Model Y.
-
Subtle exterior refinements: In line with Tesla's ongoing design development.
These developments underscore Tesla's commitment to continuously improving its flagship models and adapting them to the latest technological standards.
