Tesla remains the global market leader in the energy storage segment

Tesla Energy also defended its top position in the global market for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in 2024 - for the second year in a row. According to the latest ranking from the analysis company Wood Mackenzie, Tesla holds a market share of 15% and remains just ahead of the Chinese competitor Sungrow with 14%.

Close Race at the Top

While Tesla had a four percentage point lead the previous year, the gap has now shrunk to just one point. The third place again goes to the Chinese manufacturer CRRC with a market share of 8%.

Tesla was particularly strong in North America, where the company achieved an impressive 39% market share - far ahead of Sungrow, whose share fell from 17% to 10%. The third-place provider Powin came under pressure after filing for bankruptcy in early 2025.

Global Market Trends

The global BESS market shows an increasingly dynamic competitive environment:

  • China dominates the Top 10: Seven of the leading providers come from the People's Republic.

  • Europe: Chinese manufacturers increased their market share by 67% year-on-year; four of the ten largest providers now come from China.

  • North America: Here, however, the share of Chinese integrators fell from 23% to 16%, attributed to geopolitical tensions and US trade barriers.

Tesla's Growth in Numbers

Tesla's energy division continues to record strong operational growth:

  • Q2 2025: 9.6 GWh installed storage capacity

  • January–June 2025: 20 GWh, +48% compared to the previous year

  • Last 12 months: nearly 38 GWh

  • Forecast: In the next two quarters, Tesla is expected to surpass the mark of 100 GWh cumulative installations.

Outlook

Tesla is under increasing competitive pressure from China, but can continue to assert itself as a technology and market leader thanks to its strong market presence in North America and increasing installation numbers. The coming quarters will show whether the lead can be maintained despite the close race.
