New FSD function for older Tesla-models confirmed - Elon Musk gives update
Good news for owners of a Tesla with Hardware 3 (HW3): Contrary to much speculation, the further development of Full-Self-Driving (FSD) for older models will not be discontinued! One of the most desired functionsthe Reversing with FSDwill be available soon.
💡 Elon Musk confirmed the new function on X, and Tesla is actively working on further improvements for HW3 vehicles such as Model 3 and Model Y.
Reverse gear for FSD coming soon - Elon Musk confirms
Tesla-Vehicles with Hardware 4 (HW4) could already be equipped with FSD Unparking, reversing and starting parking maneuvers - but HW3 models have so far remained without this function.
The problem so far:
👉 FSD "thinks" it can drive backwards, but is blocked on the software side.
👉 As a result, the vehicle finds itself in a dead endwhen a three-point turn would be necessary.
👉 So far manual intervention by the driver was necessary to continue driving.
🚨 But now comes the big update:
With the new FSD version for HW3, the reverse driving will finally be activated - a further step in the direction of autonomous driving without intervention.
HW3 is being further developed - Tesla plans long-term updates
Since the introduction of FSD V12.6.1 received HW3-Model Y-driver already have improved autonomy functions. Model 3-owners are currently still waiting for the version, but the development continues.
🔎 Future plans for HW3 vehicles:
✅ FSD should feel more human - More natural driving maneuvers
✅ Possible new functions such as "Unpark" and intelligent summon
✅ Long-term option to upgrade to HW4 for fully autonomous driving
💡 Tesla Could also offer a hardware retrofit for HW3 in the futureif the company realizes that Supervised FSD is not feasible without new hardware.
Cybertruck & FSD - Not yet a complete autopilot
By the way: Even the Cybertruck cannot currently drive in reverse with FSD.

🔹 No unparking & no Smart Summon ❌
🔹 Reversing with FSD is still missing ❌
👉 Tesla working on getting the Cybertruck to the level of HW4 soon - when exactly remains to be seen.
Conclusion: Tesla HW3 is alive - and FSD is getting even better!
The statement from Elon Musk and Tesla's VP for AI Ashok Elluswamy shows that HW3 is not dead. Instead Tesla remains onolder vehicles with better autonomy functions to equip older vehicles.
