B-Pillar Recordings: Spring Update 2025 brings a big advantage to Tesla's Dashcam

B-Pillar Recordings: Spring Update 2025 brings a big advantage to Tesla's Dashcam

More eyes, more protection: With the Spring Update 2025 (Version 2025.14), Tesla is activating the B-Pillar cameras for Dashcam & Sentry Mode for the first time. However, the new all-round surveillance will initially only be available on vehicles with Hardware 4 (HW4) – including Model 3/Y from mid-2023 as well as the latest Model S/X. What the upgrade brings, why HW3 drivers miss out, and why even the Cybertruck is (still) left out, you can read here.

What changes with the update?

Six instead of four camera angles

  • Previously: Front, rear, and both fender cameras (4 feeds).

  • New: Additional recordings from the cameras between front and rear doors – critical blind spots disappear.

  • New Dashcam Viewer: Grid display of all six streams, 15-second skip buttons, quick clip change.

More storage requirement, more computing power

Two additional 1080p streams mean:

  • Higher bitrate → larger USB sticks/SSDs recommended.

  • AMD Ryzen + HW4 handle live processing (AI triggers, pre-buffering).

Who gets the B-Pillar recording?

Model Build Time Reference Autopilot Computer Status
Model S / X Refresh 2021 ff. HW4
Model 3 Highland from 09/2023 HW4
Model Y Juniper from 06/2023 HW4
Cybertruck all HW4 ❌ (not yet)
All HW3 vehicles until mid 2023 HW3

Tip: Open Software > Additional Vehicle Information – there you will find Autopilot Computer and Infotainment Processor.

Why is HW3 left out?

  • Limited RAM & CPU Power of the NVIDIA platform.

  • Double video buffer exceeds the real-time limit.

  • Tesla could potentially test reduced frame rates or on-demand recording in the future – but nothing has been officially announced yet.

Cybertruck Mystery

Despite HW4 & Ryzen, no B-Pillar mode:

  • Architecture-specific Sentry optimization for the pick-up (efficiency update 10/2024).

  • Tesla is likely working on an adapted memory/thermal solution – a later OTA retrofit is realistic.

Is an Upgrade to HW4 Worth It?

  • Those who frequently travel in city centers or parking lots benefit enormously from the side recordings.

  • For HW3 owners without a retrofit option, patience or the step to a newer model remains for now.

Conclusion

The B-Pillar recording closes a security gap and makes Tesla's camera protection significantly more comprehensive. HW3 support is still missing – but Tesla's history shows: software optimizations often come later. Until then, HW4 drivers already enjoy more evidence and a more comfortable dashcam interface today.
