Tesla has introduced another innovative update for its Superchargers, which is specially designed for vehicles with LFP batteries (lithium iron phosphate) batteries. This innovation aims to significantly reduce charging times in cold temperatures.
What is new?
The new Superchargers of the V3 and V4 generation can now charge the LFP batteries in the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y variants during the charging process. This is particularly helpful if the vehicles have not been preconditioned in advance at extremely low temperatures (below 0ºF/-18ºC). Thanks to this technology, cold batteries can be charged up to four times faster.
How does the battery heater work?
Tesla uses an innovative method: during the DC charging process, a AC ripple current (alternating ripple current) is passed through the battery. This generates heat through electrical resistance, which brings the battery up to operating temperature more quickly. This process is only possible thanks to the versatility of the NACS connection (North American Charging Standard) and Tesla's engineering skills.
Advantages of the new function:
- Faster charging times in extreme cold conditions.
- Improved efficiency thanks to preheating during the charging process.
- Reduced energy consumption for preconditioning before arrival at the Supercharger.
Which vehicles benefit?
The update applies to all Tesla Model 3 and Model Y with LFP batteries, including the standard range and Long Range variants, which were produced in limited numbers. Vehicles with other battery types, such as the 2170- or 4680 cellsare currently not affected.

With this innovation Tesla once again shows how driving comfort and efficiency can be increased through technical innovation. Drivers can not only charge faster, but also save time and money. Whether the function will be extended to all Tesla-models in the future remains to be seen.
