Dispute in Grünheide: Tesla and IG Metall in conflict

The tensions between Tesla and the IG Metall trade union at the Grünheide plant continue to escalate. While Tesla stands for innovation and rapid expansion, working conditions and cooperation between the works council and the trade union continue to cause controversy. A recent court case has once again brought these issues to the fore.

IG Metall demands dismissal of works council chairwoman

The latest conflict revolves around Michaela Schmitz, the chairwoman of the works council at Tesla in Grünheide. IG Metall accuses her of grossly violating her legal obligations. Specifically, she is alleged to have made decisions on her own authority, ignored union motions and unlawfully excluded a union representative from a meeting. The union has therefore applied to the Frankfurt (Oder) labor court to have Schmitz removed from office.

The dispute illustrates the difficult cooperation between IG Metall and Tesla. While the union is insisting on the rights of the approximately 11,000 employees Tesla rejects collective agreements. Elon Musk himself described such agreements as potentially divisive and expressed skepticism towards IG Metall.

Focus on working conditions

Working conditions at the Grünheide plant are a central point of contention. In a survey conducted by IG Metall, 80% of the employees questioned stated that they were overworked. 60% reported regular pain at work, and 90% expressed doubts about being able to withstand the strain until retirement. Tesla The company counters these accusations by pointing to competitive wages and benefits.

The handling of sick notes is viewed particularly critically. According to IG Metall Tesla is introducing a strict monitoring system that includes personal calls, IT entries and even inspection visits to employees on sick leave. These measures have led to numerous warnings and a climate of fear among employees.

Works council under pressure

Internal tensions within the works council exacerbated the situation. Schmitz is criticized for delaying IG Metall proposals, including a proposal for additional breaks, which 90% of those surveyed consider necessary. At the same time, she rejects simplifications to sick leave and speaks out publicly against the union's proposals.

At a meeting in May, the conflict escalated when an IG Metall representative was excluded from the meeting after criticizing the working conditions. The union sees this as a clear violation of the law and demands consequences.

Tesla Remains silent, IG Metall demands consequences

While Tesla remains silent on the current allegations, IG Metall defends its actions: "The legal violations must stop," says Dirk Schulze, Regional Director of IG Metall. The Frankfurt (Oder) labor court's decision to dismiss Schmitz could have far-reaching consequences for works council work at Tesla have.
