Polestar plans production in Europe - Tesla Grünheide has an advantage

The Swedish Tesla-competitor Polestar wants to produce electric cars in Europe in Europe. This is the company's response to rising transportation costs and the tariffs imposed by the EU on electric cars from China. It is still unclear when and where production will start.

Polestar relocates production to Europe

The Polestar 7developed for the European market SUVis to be the first model to be sold not only in Asia or the USA, but also in Europe but also in Europe. Polestar boss Michael Lohscheller told dpa that the costs for vehicle transportation would be significantly reduced. In addition, the company wants to EU punitive tariffs which could amount to up to 36.3 percent can amount to up to 36.3 percent.

Polestar currently produces mainly in Chinese plants and in the USA at Volvo. Where exactly the new model will be built in Europe, however, remains to be seen. Lohscheller emphasized, however, that the Group is focusing its overall business in Europe on broader base especially in Germany and France.

More car dealerships for Polestar - less focus on online sales

Until now, Polestar has mainly sold its vehicles via online orders and delivers them via a small number of showrooms. In the future around 300 dealers worldwide are to be involved in sales. This step could help to increase sales figures after Polestar recorded a 15 percent decline in sales in 2024. Overall, the car manufacturer delivered 44,851 vehicles.

By 2027, Polestar aims to increase annual growth in deliveries to 30 to 35 percent. Lohscheller announced that Polestar would then operate financially independently and invest autonomously.

New problems on the US market

While Polestar is expanding in Europe, the company is coming under pressure in the USA. The US government has decided that no connected cars from Chinese-controlled manufacturers from 2027 onwards. may no longer be sold - even if they are produced in the USA. As Polestar is majority-owned by the Chinese Geely Group the company could be excluded from the US market in the future. However, Lohscheller assured that Polestar would find solutionsto continue serving the US market.

Comparison to Tesla - Production in Germany as an advantage

A significant advantage for Tesla compared to Polestar is the already established production in Europe. In the Gigafactory Grünheide near Berlin produces Tesla the Model Y for the European market, whereby the company avoids high import costs and punitive tariffs.

While Polestar is still looking for a European production site Tesla already has a decisive locational advantage in Grünheide. Here run thousands of vehicles roll off the production line here every weekwhich can be delivered quickly to customers in Europe.
