Tesla Cybertruck range extender officially canceled

Tesla has confirmed via email that the Cybertruck Range Extender will no longer be sold. Pre-order customers will receive their deposit back in full. This ends an option that was supposed to enable a range increase to over 700 km – albeit at the cost of 16,000 US dollars and about a third of the loading area.

Why the Range Extender is disappearing

Missed target range

  • Original promise (2019): 500 miles / 804 km

  • Production model (2023): max. 340 mi / 547 km

  • Range Extender was supposed to close the gap → later only predicted as “445+ mi”.

Technical & practical hurdles

  1. Bed space loss: Additional battery blocked ~⅓ of the loading area.

  2. Weight & cost: 16,000 US$ surcharge, several hundred kilograms extra.

  3. Complex integration: Cooling, high-voltage connection, and crash safety complicated approval.

Impact for current Cybertruck owners

Topic What changes Alternative
Range Max. 523 km (AWD) remains the upper limit More efficient tires or later OTA updates for consumption optimization
Usability Loading area remains fully intact More space for accessories like bed covers or fridge modules
Finance Deposit will be automatically refunded Budget can flow into Premium Upgrades (Acceleration Boost, Wraps)

Tesla's Next Steps – what's coming instead of Range Extender?

1. Battery Updates

Tesla is working according to Q1 Earnings on more powerful 4680 cell chemistry. Initial prototypes promise higher energy density with the same space.

2. Software Efficiency

The 2025 Spring Patch (2025.14) already brought roll optimizations. Further OTA updates could increase real ranges by 3-5%.

3. Accessory Focus

Expected are flat bed batteries from third-party providers or Tesla's own “Powerwall-to-Go” solutions, which combine loading area and range.

Conclusion & Recommendation

The departure from the Cybertruck Range Extender is understandable: high costs, low practical benefit, and a design that restricted the core function of the pickup. In the short term, this means no range miracles for owners – but full loading area freedom and a refund of the deposit. In the long term, Tesla is likely to focus on more efficient cells and software tuning to achieve the promised ranges without bulky additional modules.
