CATL presented the "Shenxing": a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with exceptional fast charging capability. In just 10 minutes, it is said to charge enough energy to travel 400 kilometers. At room temperature, the battery reaches 80% of its capacity in 10 minutes. The optimum operating temperature is reached quickly. At -10 °C, it charges from 0 to 80 % in 30 minutes. The leading Chinese battery manufacturer plans to mass-produce this technology from the end of the year, so that the first electric vehicles could be running on it next year.
According to CATL, the Shenxing battery overcomes the previous performance limitations of LFP technology and leads battery innovation. It charges quickly over a wide temperature range and meets strict safety standards. Compared to previous LFP batteries, it also charges faster at low temperatures and reduces the risk of fire.
Gao Han, technology director for electric cars at CATL, emphasized the vision that the Shenxing battery could become standard equipment in electric vehicles through research and cost reduction. The battery enables ranges of over 700 kilometers and is a remarkable advancement of LFP technology.
Compared to the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NCM) cells commonly used in modern electric cars, LFP technology is less powerful but more robust and cost-effective. This type of battery is gaining importance, especially for entry-level models. With the Shenxing battery, CATL takes the performance of LFP technology to a new level.
