Tesla withdraws from solar installations and relies on partners

Tesla has started to wind down its own solar installation business and is instead focusing on certified third-party providers. After the company acquired SolarCity in 2016, it installed Tesla initially installed its unique solar tiles, conventional solar panels and powerwalls for both commercial and residential customers. However, over the years Tesla lost interest in the actual installation work and is now shifting its focus to production and partnerships.

Decline in in-house installations

Since the second quarter of 2020 Tesla a quarterly decline of 10% or more in in-house installations of solar tiles, solar panels and powerwalls. While the production of solar tiles and the expansion of powerwall production continue, the rate of in-house installations has slowed dramatically.

Certification program for third-party suppliers

In response to this Tesla has begun to certify third-party providers in North America and Europe for the installation of powerwalls and solar panels. In the USA, the program also includes the installation of solar tiles. Launched in 2020, the Certified Installer Program has now produced approximately 2,000 certified installers in over 14 countries who have collectively completed more than one million installations, according to James Bickford, Tesla's Director of Global Sales for Residential Energy Products.

The program offers extensive support, including virtual and in-person training, on-site training, specialized installation tools and access to the Tesla One software platform. In addition, Tesla's partner platform provides marketing resources and a dedicated account manager.

Tesla One Dashboard

The Tesla One Dashboard provides third-party installers with a centralized platform to manage quotes, installations and repairs via a mobile app. This user-friendly application allows installers to track tasks for specific projects and customize installations to individual customer requirements.

Strategic change in the energy sector

This move signals a significant shift in Tesla's business strategy in the energy sector. Instead of acting as a first-time installer Tesla a hands-off approach in which local electricians and contractors are Tesla-install products under its brand. While the Powerwall business has expanded in recent years, Tesla's solar panels and solar tiles have lost public attention.

Conclusion

With the withdrawal from the direct installation business and the focus on partnerships Tesla is making a strategic change that has the potential to have a lasting impact on the energy market. It remains to be seen how this new direction will affect the industry and Tesla's position within it.
