Tesla Model Y in China: New sale, same price

Tesla has announced the sale of the regular Model Y started - at exactly the same price as the Model Y Launch Serieswhich was launched in January. This pricing strategy is causing a stir, as buyers of the Launch Series originally benefited from a limited special offer.

Same prices for both versions

The new Model Y is offered in China at the following prices:

  • Model Y Rear-wheel drive (RWD): 263,500 yuan (approx. 35,900 USD)
  • Model Y Long-distance all-wheel drive (AWD): 303,500 yuan (approx. 41,300 USD)

These prices correspond exactly to those of the Launch Serieswhich Tesla was offered as a limited version at the beginning of the year. However, the regular Model Y however, the extended warranty of two years or 40,000 km, which Launch Series buyers had received as an additional benefit, is no longer available.

Delivery times and market situation

According to Tesla China's website, the expected delivery time:

  • RWD version: 2 to 4 weeks
  • AWD version: 6 to 10 weeks

Meanwhile, production of the Model 3 in Giga Shanghai remains at a high level. The delivery times for the Model 3 are between 1 and 3 weeks - regardless of the variant selected.

Comparison with previous Tesla-offers

Tesla recently introduced some of its sales incentives in China for the Model 3 extended, including:

  • 8,000 yuan insurance subsidy
  • 0% financing for 5 years (applies to RWD and AWD, not to Model 3 performance)

However, these benefits were not applied to the Model Y extended. Instead Tesla on a consistent pricing strategy to maintain interest in its best-selling model.

Conclusion: No price surprises, but fewer additional services

While Tesla-customers are happy about the stable prices can be happy about the stable prices, buyers of the regular Model Y to the additional warranty services of the Launch Series. The decision not to lower the price should strengthen Tesla's position in the competitive Chinese market, where manufacturers such as BYD, Xiaomi and Nio are fighting for market share with aggressive price cuts.
