Tesla is under immense pressure in China, the world's largest market for electric vehicles. Competition, particularly from domestic manufacturers such as BYD, Li Auto and Leapmotor, is making life difficult for the American e-car pioneer. After a rather disappointing year Tesla however, recorded a remarkable recovery in August and achieved its best sales performance of the year to date.
Strong August figures: A ray of hope for Tesla
In August 2024 Tesla recorded a significant increase in sales figures in China. Over 63,000 vehicles were sold, an increase of 37% compared to the previous month. These figures show that Tesla is able to maintain its market position despite tough competition. However, a comparison of sales with the same month last year shows a slight drop of around two percent, which illustrates the challenges in the Chinese market.
While Tesla delivered impressive figures in August, the company is still lagging behind its local competitors. BYD, a leading Chinese manufacturer, sold 370,854 vehicles in the same month, an increase of 35 percent. Other Chinese manufacturers such as Leapmotor and Li Auto also outperformed Tesla in the sales figures.
Growth opportunities in second and third cities
An area in which Tesla is the so-called second and third cities. These smaller and medium-sized cities with less developed car markets have become an important growth driver. According to a study by China Merchants Bank, the Tesla-sales there rose by an impressive 78 percent in July compared to the previous year. In larger cities such as Hangzhou and Nanjing, too Tesla scored with an increase of 47 percent.
This development shows that Tesla can still conquer untapped markets despite strong competition in the larger metropolitan areas. In particular, interest-free loans for the purchase of electric cars and the recent approval for purchases by government agencies have enabled Tesla further boost its sales.
Export and potential hurdles in Europe and Canada
The Teslas produced in China are not only sold locally, but are also exported to other markets such as the EU and Canada. Year-on-year, sales of vehicles manufactured in China, including exports, rose by three percent to 86,697 units. However, future challenges are looming here. The EU is planning to impose high import duties on e-cars produced in China, which could significantly worsen export conditions. For Tesla this could pose a significant problem, as it could have a negative impact on profitability and sales opportunities in these markets.
Future projects: The six-seater Model Y and robo-taxi
To further boost sales in China, the company is planning Tesla plans to start production of a new, six-seater variant of the Model Y. This model could reignite the interest of Chinese buyers and revive sales of the slightly older model. Tesla's suppliers in Shanghai are already preparing for increased production, which shows that Tesla Tesla is ready to meet the needs of the market and counter the competition.
