With the latest Software Update 2025.26, Tesla quietly introduces a feature without official release notes that addresses a common but risky situation: accidentally leaving the vehicle open when a passenger with an active phone key remains in the car.
The Problem: Deceptively "locked"
Many Tesla drivers know it: You get out, lock the car - but a fellow passenger with a registered smartphone key stays inside. From the outside, it looks like the vehicle is secured, but in reality, the doors can still be opened.
New warnings inside and outside
Tesla now responds with a Smart Lock Alert:
-
Inside: A new, bright animation appears on the touchscreen near the lock symbols. Additionally, a note: "Doors can still be opened. Phone key is nearby."
-
Outside: The hazard lights flash twice, and the mirrors remain folded to signal that the vehicle is not fully locked.
Solution directly in the vehicle menu
Through a drop-down menu, the complete locking can be enforced - even if a phone key is detected nearby.
The detection apparently works through a combination of seat sensors (for person recognition) and Bluetooth signal strength of the phone key. Ultra-Wideband is not required, making it possible to use even with older models.
Supported models
-
Successfully tested: 2025 Model Y & 2018 Model 3
-
Currently unavailable: Cybertruck
Conclusion
The Smart Lock Alert closes a small but safety-relevant gap. Especially with multiple people and multiple phone keys, the new feature provides more clarity and security.
