Tesla Recall campaign: EPAS steering problems fixed via OTA update

Tesla has issued a voluntary recall for certain Model 3 and Model Y 2023 model year vehicles to rectify a problem with the electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS). The problem, which occurs in vehicles with a software version prior to 2023.38.4, can cause the steering assistance to fail when approaching 0 km/h. The cause is a possible overvoltage that overloads the motor control components of the EPAS.

Background and technical solution
The update to fix the problem was already made available on October 19, 2023 via an over-the-air update (OTA). Vehicles using software version 2023.38.4 or a later version are protected from the defect. According to Tesla affected vehicle owners can install the latest software version without visiting a workshop to prevent power steering failure. In the USA, the recall affects around 376,241 vehicles, in Canada around 38,671 units - although it is estimated that only around 1% of affected vehicles actually have the defect. Already 99% of the affected US vehicles have the update installed.

Reasons for the voluntary recall
Although the technical problem has been solved since October 2023, the recall is voluntary. Tesla is proactively responding to concerns raised by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which had already launched an investigation into the EPAS problem. The purpose of the recall is to ensure customer safety and avoid misunderstandings. Vehicles in which the steering assistance fails at low speeds can thus be protected from potential accident risks.

Sensational reporting in the media
Media such as Computer Bild, Spiegel and Auto Motor Sport have given the recall sensationalist coverage. These reports portray the recall as a serious safety defect and emphasize the negative impact on the image of Tesla. However, this ignores the fact that the problem was already rectified over a year ago by the OTA update. Tesla points out that the update reliably prevents the failure of EPAS steering assistance and that no workshop visits are necessary.

Conclusion
The voluntary recall of Tesla shows that the company is actively working on the safety of its vehicles. The solution to the EPAS problem via the OTA update was already made available in October 2023, meaning that the technical problem has long since been resolved. Despite the lurid media coverage, one thing is certain: Tesla has reacted early and offered affected customers a simple and effective solution.
