Tesla is apparently preparing for a massive expansion of its robotaxi network in the USA. Currently, the autonomous ride service is only active in Austin (Texas) and the San Francisco Bay Area (California). In Austin, the vehicles are already driving without a driver at the wheel, only with a safety companion in the passenger seat. In California, however, a safety driver is still behind the wheel - regulatory requirements currently do not allow operation without a driver.
Despite this limitation, the service in the Bay Area already covers an impressive 80-mile area from north of San Francisco to San Jose.
Goal: Half of the US population by year-end
At the Q2 2025 Earnings Call, Elon Musk announced that Tesla aims to reach “probably half of the US population” with robotaxi services by the end of the year - provided the necessary approvals are granted.
New job postings as a clear indication
A look at current Tesla job postings now suggests which cities might be next. According to observations by @Teslayoda on X, Tesla is seeking staff for locations known for their high population density and tourist significance:
-
Palo Alto, California
-
Brooklyn, New York
-
Houston & Farmers Branch (Dallas), Texas
-
Tempe, Arizona
-
Henderson (Las Vegas), Nevada
-
Tampa, Clermont & Miami, Florida
These cities are not officially confirmed, but local recruitment of staff - especially for vehicle maintenance, data collection, and safety monitoring - is often the first step before a market launch.
Conclusion
Tesla seems determined to massively roll out the robotaxi service in 2025 and thus transfer the experiences gained in Austin and the Bay Area to new markets. If the expansion plan succeeds, Tesla could soon offer autonomous rides in many US metropolises - and collect important data for the later international launch.
