Tesla would have to suspend Cybercab and Semi production due to tariffs

It was said that Tesla was forced to temporarily stop the production of its future projects Cybercab and Semi – triggered by the drastically increased tariffs imposed by President Trump on Chinese components.

Background of the tariff conflict

Imports from China were originally subject to a special tariff of 34%, which, according to reports, would rise to 84% and finally to 125%. Together with the existing duties, the total tariff would thus amount to 145%. Tesla initially considered bearing the additional costs itself but was eventually deterred by the high rates.

Suspension of production

  • Cybercab: The planned test production from October 2025 and the series production scheduled for 2026 would have to be stopped because the required components could no longer be imported economically.

  • Semi: The all-electric semi-trailer truck Semi should also not go into series production temporarily because central components were affected by the tariff burden.

Impact for Tesla and customers

It was expected that delivery times for customers would be extended and Tesla would have to bear higher costs, which could affect final prices or margins. In addition, models S and X were temporarily not available for order in China, as they were not produced there and thus also fell under the new tariff rates.

Political dimension

Elon Musk sharply criticized Trump's tariffs and called his economic advisor Peter Navarro "dumber than a sack of bricks." Nevertheless, the company now sees itself forced to adjust its production plans.

Outlook

As long as the US tariffs remain at this level, Tesla would have to continue to postpone its future projects. Only with a mitigation of trade measures or through bilateral exceptions could the production of Cybercab and Semi be resumed.
