The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has listed new eligible electric vehicles – including updated versions of the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y L with impressively increased range.
New Batteries, More Kilometers
Thus, the new Model 3 in China receives a 78.4-kWh battery, while the Model Y L is equipped with an 82-kWh battery. The ranges according to the more generous Chinese test cycle:
-
Model 3: up to 830 km (previously max. 753 km)
-
Model Y L: up to 751 km
The batteries come from the South Korean manufacturer LG Energy Solution. Depending on the equipment, the Model 3 can also have “only” 800 km range, but then with a stronger drive of 225 kW (306 hp) instead of the previous 194 kW (264 hp)
Model Y L: More Space Thanks to Third Row of Seats
The new Model Y L is specially tailored to the Chinese market. It offers:
-
All-wheel drive with 142 kW (front) and 198 kW (rear)
-
Around 15 cm longer body than the standard Model Y
-
Third row of seats for up to 6 seats
-
Appearance largely identical to the previous Model Y
-
Top speed: 201 km/h
With the additional row of seats, Tesla particularly targets families and customers with greater space requirements.
Market Strategy in China
Tesla previously had no model with three rows of seats on offer – a segment that is growing strongly in China. The regular Model Y is priced there from about 32,000 euros. The price for the Model Y L has not yet been announced, but is likely to be higher due to the all-wheel drive.
Whether the Model Y L will also be offered outside of China is currently open. However, it is clear: With the new battery variants, Tesla aims to score more strongly again in the world's largest electric car market.
