Is the Model Y L coming to the USA? Musk causes confusion

Tesla officially introduced the Model Y L in China this week - a larger, six-seater version of the popular Model Y with new seats, more space, and practical comfort features. Many observers expected a market launch soon in North America and Europe after prototypes were already spotted in Germany. But now Elon Musk himself has caused some disillusionment.

Musk: "End of 2026 - or never"

On X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated that the Model Y L would be produced in the USA no earlier than the end of 2026 - and possibly not at all. His reasoning: With the imminent start of Unsupervised FSD (fully autonomous driving without supervision) and the Robotaxi network, a large, family-oriented SUV might become unnecessary.

But exactly this statement triggered a storm of criticism. Many potential buyers made it clear: A two-seater Robotaxi is no substitute for a spacious family car.

Family SUV vs. Robotaxi Vision

  • Model Y L: More space than the Model Y, significantly cheaper than a Model X - perfect for families.

  • Robotaxi: Small, two-seater vehicle, intended for autonomous passenger transport.

While Tesla is betting on autonomy in the long term, many customers see the need for classic, spacious SUVs for years to come. Analysts note that the complete transition to autonomous mobility could take decades.

Market Reactions

  • Elon's comment led to a 2.5% drop in Tesla stock, which closed the day 1.6% down.

  • On X, the reaction was clear: Buyers feel overlooked with their current needs for space and everyday usability.

Alternative: SUV Based on Cybertruck?

Should Tesla not bring the Model Y L to North America, a Cybertruck-based SUV variant could be a solution. Without a stainless steel body and high-tech extras like rear-wheel steering, a cheaper platform for a robust family SUV or even a delivery van could be developed.

Conclusion

Whether the Model Y L will ever come to North America remains unclear. The fact is: The model fills a large gap in the Tesla portfolio between Model Y and Model X. While Musk sees the future in Robotaxi, many customers already need practical and affordable electric SUVs today.

The market will decide whether Tesla is right with its autonomy vision - or if the Model Y L is also indispensable in the USA.
