Tesla Model Y 2025 wins the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for the fifth time

The Tesla Model Y has done it again in 2025: For the fifth consecutive time, the popular electric SUV has been honored with the highest award from the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – the Top Safety Pick+. This reinforces Tesla's reputation for building one of the safest vehicles on the road.

Highest rating in almost all categories

To receive the coveted Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must achieve the highest rating of "Good" in numerous demanding crash tests. These include:

  • Revised moderate overlap front test

  • Small overlap front (driver side and passenger side)

  • Side impact tests

  • As well as strict requirements for headlight performance and pedestrian protection

The Tesla Model Y 2025 (still the pre-facelift model, the refresh comes as the 2026 model year) excelled in almost all disciplines with top scores. Particularly in the pedestrian emergency braking assistant, the standard collision avoidance system performed excellently and successfully prevented a collision in all day and night scenarios.

Only in the user-friendliness of the LATCH child seat anchors did it receive an "Acceptable" rating instead of the highest rating – however, this area is not a requirement for the TSP+ classification.

Tightened IIHS criteria 2024 and 2025

That the Model Y achieves the top rating even under the tightened rules makes the award all the more remarkable. Since 2024, vehicles must achieve a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap front crash – previously "Acceptable" was sufficient. Additionally, there is now a second dummy in the rear seat to test rear seat safety.

The tests for pedestrian detection have also been adjusted: Instead of separate day and night tests, there is now a combined rating, where at least "Acceptable" must be achieved.

The Model Y met all requirements with flying colors and showed minimal injury risk for both front and rear occupants.

Strong competition – but only one other winner

In the current test series, alongside Tesla, only the Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid (model year from December 2024 with safety updates) achieved the TSP+.

Conclusion: Tesla's Model Y once again proves that safety and electromobility can go hand in hand. For buyers, the TSP+ title is a strong argument – especially in a segment where safety is a decisive purchase criterion.
