Tesla has now confirmed on Twitter that around 10 million 4680 battery cells have already been produced at the new Gigafactory in Texas. This is the total production to date and not the current production. For a better estimate: 10 million 4680 cells are enough to produce around 12,000 Model Y to produce. Nevertheless, this announcement is an important milestone for Tesla's production ramp-up, as Tesla will rely heavily on the new cells and its own cell production in the future to become even more independent of suppliers.
Since the big announcement of its own cell strategy at Battery Day 2020, Tesla has been struggling with some production issues. A lack of capacity in Fremont and bottlenecks in material procurement have led to significant delays in production. However, Tesla is sticking to its claim that the new 4680 cells could reduce battery costs by more than 50 percent and has been trying to mass produce the 4680 cells since the unveiling.

Earlier this year, Tesla gave a long-awaited update on 4680 cell production that included good news about overcoming bottlenecks, but no specifics on production volume. Now Tesla is likely to rely more on cells produced at the Gigafactory in Texas, which should help reduce logistics costs. In addition to production in California and Texas, Tesla has also announced an expansion of its Nevada Gigafactory near Reno, which will produce 4,680 cells.
