Tesla could soon expand its pickup portfolio with a more compact model. According to current reports, the design studio in California is working intensively on concepts that are better suited for narrow streets, urban environments, and international markets. A final decision is yet to be made, but the considerations are already moving in a concrete direction.
Why a smaller electric pickup?
The current Tesla Cybertruck is a real eye-catcher - angular design, massive dimensions, and a format that primarily works on North American roads. In Europe or Asia, however, it is not yet available. Reasons for this include safety regulations and the sheer size, which would be impractical in many cities.
Even before production started in October 2023, the Cybertruck was slightly reduced in size to improve everyday usability and pass through the tunnels of the Boring Company. Nevertheless, it remains too large for many markets.
Hints from Tesla's leadership
Lars Moravy, responsible for the powertrain at Tesla, hinted during a public appearance that a more compact pickup concept has been discussed internally several times. Particularly urban markets and international customers could benefit from a smaller model. In China, adjustments have already been made to the Cybertruck to allow for approval.
Moravy also brought up an interesting idea: In addition to passenger transport, compact pickups could be used for goods and delivery traffic in combination with Tesla's planned robotaxi services.
Open design - reduced Cybertruck or new model?
Whether Tesla is merely developing a smaller version of the Cybertruck or launching a completely new pickup design remains open. Moravy deliberately only spoke of the "pickup" - the name Cybertruck was not mentioned in this context.
Market potential in Europe
In North America, the Cybertruck achieves solid sales figures and was repeatedly the best-selling electric pickup model in quarterly comparisons in 2024. However, this success cannot simply be transferred to Europe. Narrow old town streets, limited parking spaces, and other mobility needs require a different concept here. A compact electric pickup could fill this market gap and appeal to both private customers and businesses.
Conclusion:
It is still open whether Tesla will actually bring a smaller pickup to the market. However, the strategic considerations clearly show that the company wants to further diversify its model range - and is also thinking about international markets. A compact electric pickup could not only enrich urban electromobility but also open up new target groups for Tesla.
