Tesla relies on Germany instead of China for India exports

Tesla is preparing to enter the Indian market - but with a surprising strategy: instead of importing vehicles from Giga Shanghai, the company will source models from Germany. The reason: geopolitical tensions and concerns on the part of the Indian government.

Why import Tesla from Germany instead of China?

The decision was significantly influenced by the Indian government. From 2024, India will allow the import of up to 8,000 electric cars per year with reduced customs duties of 15% - a significant difference to the previous 110% import duty.

However, this regulation is subject to one condition: Companies must invest at least USD 500 million in local production. Tesla The company is therefore planning its own factory in India in the long term, but is initially relying on imports to enter the market.

As India's government takes a critical view of Chinese investments, it decided to Tesla opted to bypass geopolitical tensions - and is sourcing the vehicles from Giga Berlin instead.

Indian states fight over Tesla's mega-investment

Tesla plans to build a plant in India with a capacity of 500,000 vehicles per year - an investment of between USD 2 and 3 billion.

The competition between India's states for this deal is enormous. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Telangana are considered top candidates as they are already established as automobile hubs and offer convenient proximity to seaports.

A government insider told the Times of India:

"The leading states are showing great urgency and trying to Tesla to win with attractive offers."

Infrastructure, tax incentives and access to export ports are key factors in Tesla's decision.

Tesla wants to offer a low-cost e-car in India

Another goal of Tesla in India is to introduce an affordable electric car. The vehicle is expected to cost between Rs 20-25 lakh (approx. USD 22,000-28,000) - a significant step towards the mass market viability of e-cars in India.

Conclusion: Strategic move for long-term success

With the decision to initially import from Germany, India is circumventing Tesla trade conflicts with China and ensures that it secures the best subsidies in India. Once the location for Giga India is finalized, the company could revolutionize the market - with a locally produced, affordable Tesla-variant.
