Tesla shared exciting information about its progress in developing the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system in its latest update. The company's ambitious goals include not only the robotaxi service and humanoid robots like Optimus but also the introduction of the FSD Unsupervised system. The latest development in full autonomous vehicle control is expected to shape not only Tesla drivers but also the entire automotive industry in the coming years.
FSD Supervised: Progress and Challenges
The current version of FSD, FSD Supervised, has been available since the introduction of FSD V12 last year. However, there have been no major updates for over 100 days. Tesla has continuously worked on improving the system by collecting over 7.7 million miles per day in North America and China. This data helps Tesla to further train the system and advance the processing of automated data.
FSD in Europe: Regulatory Hurdles and Region-Specific Training Data
Tesla recently launched FSD in China, the first launch outside of North America. Interestingly, this launch was conducted without region-specific training data, as Chinese data cannot be uploaded outside the country due to local regulations. In Europe, Tesla is still awaiting regulatory approval for FSD and aims to introduce FSD Supervised on the continent by the end of 2025. Given the regulatory delays, however, this could remain an ambitious goal.
Region-Specific Parameters for FSD
Another goal of Tesla is to optimize FSD for specific conditions such as snow, sun, and fog. Tesla plans to develop parameters trained on the specific conditions in different regions to improve the driving experience in challenging weather conditions or special local requirements. However, Tesla has emphasized that these adjustments are not necessarily required for the approval of FSD Unsupervised but are intended to enhance the reliability and comfort of use.
Price Changes for FSD: A Look into the Future
Tesla already announced in 2023 that with the further development of FSD, the price might also increase. The full Unsupervised functionality is expected to significantly increase the value of FSD, leading to a possible price change. Currently, the price for the monthly FSD subscription remains at 99 USD, but Tesla is considering different pricing structures for FSD Supervised and Unsupervised.
Current Challenges in FSD Development
A major topic remains the validation of the system. Tesla faces the challenge of repeatedly solving "edge cases" that test the system. On average, the system currently requires an intervention every 10,000 miles. Given the fact that Tesla drives 7.7 million miles daily with FSD, about 770 events occur daily that need to be reviewed. The continuous expansion of AI training centers, especially the Cortex system in Giga Texas, will help overcome these challenges.
FSD Unsupervised: The goal of full autonomy
The ultimate goal of Tesla is the introduction of FSD Unsupervised – a fully autonomous driving mode without human intervention. Tesla has already begun to autonomously move Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck from the production line to the shipping area, highlighting the advances in unsupervised technology.
FSD Unsupervised for customers: A planned launch by the end of 2025
Tesla plans to introduce FSD Unsupervised for customers by the end of 2025. The company will ensure that the system is 10 times safer than a human driver before it is released to the public. However, regulatory approvals will continue to pose a challenge, so Tesla expects that FSD Unsupervised will initially be available in a few cities and then rapidly expand. Tesla has also announced that a Model Y is expected to be delivered autonomously to a customer by the end of 2025 – a significant step for future vehicle delivery.
