Tesla has started to equip its vehicles with 5G-capable modems, resulting in significantly higher data transfer rates. This upgrade affects the latest models such as the Model Y, the Cybertruck and the new Model 3. The introduction of the 5G modem, officially called "TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT - TCU - GEN II", has been announced in the electronic parts catalog of Tesla discovered.
Higher speeds where available
Although 5G networks are still being built in many regions, particularly in rural and suburban areas, the benefits are Tesla-drivers in urban areas are already benefiting from the higher speeds. While previous LTE modems enabled speeds between 20 Mbps and 100 Mbps, the new Gen II modem can achieve data rates of up to 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps). This not only improves streaming and navigation, but also future functions that rely on high data rates.
New models and retrofit options
Interestingly, the new Model Y can be equipped with either the previous LTE modem or the new 5G modem, so buyers will not know which version has been installed until they receive the vehicle. For existing Tesla-owners, the question of a retrofit option arises. Although the hardware replacement appears technically feasible, it requires programming by the Tesla-service and the integration of a vehicle-specific SIM card. There is currently no official information on the cost or availability of such a retrofit, but it is possible that Tesla will offer such services in the future.
Tesla's commitment to connectivity
The introduction of the 5G modem underscores Tesla's commitment to advanced vehicle connectivity. While direct satellite connections, for example via Starlink, are not yet available, this step shows that Tesla is continuously working to provide its customers with the best possible connectivity technology.
