Tesla FSD V14: Less driver monitoring thanks to massive update

Tesla is preparing a significant change with the upcoming FSD V14 update: The requirements for driver monitoring are to be significantly reduced. Elon Musk confirmed that this is part of the major “10x Parameter” update that will be released next month – and is expected to bring massive improvements in driving behavior, safety, and a more human-like driving style.

Background: Strict monitoring since V12.4

Since the introduction of camera-based driver monitoring in FSD V12.4, drivers had to meet strict attention requirements. Even short distractions quickly led to warnings or strikes. Although a short grace period was introduced in V13.2.9, the monitoring remained intensive.

With V14, this is set to change: Tesla wants to reduce the attention pressure to make the system more practical and safer for everyday use.

Reasons for the change

Tesla cites two main factors:

  1. Significantly higher performance of the new FSD build – more complex scenarios can be better managed.

  2. More safety in everyday life – many users briefly deactivate FSD to, for example, check their phone or adjust the route to avoid strikes. According to Tesla, this leads to more risk than allowing the action during active FSD.

Still supervised – but more relaxed

Despite the relaxations, FSD remains not an autonomous system. Musk emphasized that complex intersections, bad weather, or rare edge cases still require driver attention. The goal is a balance between safety and comfort.

Outlook: Robotaxi technology for customers

The FSD version in the Austin Robotaxi is currently about 6 months ahead of the customer builds. Many improvements from it are now to be incorporated into V14 – without the Austin-specific peculiarities. Musk describes the driving behavior of the new build as “eerily human-like“.

In the long term, FSD Unsupervised is also to be launched in the first cities based on V14 – possibly as early as 2025.
