Tesla brings B-pillar camera recording for the Cybertruck

Cybertruck drivers can rejoice: Tesla has officially confirmed that the vehicle's B-pillar cameras will soon be usable in Sentry Mode and on the dashcam. This will expand the functionality of the surveillance cameras – a feature many Cybertruck owners have been wishing for months.

Why was the Cybertruck excluded until now?

In the spring, Tesla introduced the recording of B-pillar cameras for the first time for vehicles with AI4 hardware. Instead of four cameras, six cameras could be used simultaneously. However, the Cybertruck was left out at that time – which puzzled many, as it already has a particularly efficient Sentry Mode system.

The Cybertruck Program Manager Siddhant Awasthi has now explained the background: The reason was not the hardware, but the unique software and system architecture of the Cybertruck. The previous solutions from models S, 3, X, and Y could not be directly transferred and required additional development work.

The update is imminent

The good news: This work is now complete. According to Tesla, the function is now in the final testing phases – most likely among employees. This means the feature could be available to Cybertruck owners with one of the upcoming updates (probably version 2025.30 or 2025.32).

Not yet visible in the app

A small downside: Although all vehicles with AI4 hardware will soon be able to use the B-pillar cameras, only the previous camera views can currently be accessed in the Tesla app. The new angles are initially only available directly in the vehicle. Since there is no apparent technical reason for this limitation, it is expected that the app will soon follow suit.

High demand among Cybertruck owners

The Cybertruck, with its striking design, attracts a lot of attention – both positive and negative. Vandalism or unwanted proximity in parking lots is not uncommon. The B-pillar cameras are crucial here because they cover the front side areas of the vehicle, which previous camera setups could not fully capture.

This closes an important security gap for Tesla and provides better 360-degree protection in Sentry Mode.

Conclusion

With the upcoming introduction of B-pillar recording, Tesla is finally bringing a highly anticipated feature to the Cybertruck. Owners can look forward to improved all-around visibility and more security – likely with the next major software update in the coming weeks.
