Tesla has updated its website and listed six new car brands as "available soon" for access to the Supercharger network. Besides Mercedes-Benzwhich was already announced last week, now also BMW, Genesis, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Kia and Lucid in the list. However, Kia owners will have to wait longer than originally planned.
Kia: Delay in Supercharger access
Kia had announced that its electric vehicles, including the EV6, EV9 and Niro EV, from January 15, 2025 access to the Tesla Supercharger network. However, this schedule has now been postponed until spring 2025.
James Bell, Head of Corporate Communications at Kia, confirmed the delay:
"There has been a delay and we are working with the relevant teams to confirm the new availability." Details of the cause were not disclosed.
Free adapters for Kia customers
Kia plans to offer buyers of a EV9 or a 2024 EV6 (purchased after September 4, 2024) free of charge NACS adapter will be provided. For older models, owners will have to purchase adapters separately, although prices are not yet known. It is currently unclear whether the delay will also affect the availability of the adapters.
Tesla Supercharger: an industry standard
The Tesla Supercharger network is known for its speed and reliability. Already six nonTesla-brands already have access:
- Ford
- Rivian
- General Motors (GM)
- Polestar
- Volvo
- Nissan (with the Ariya model)
With the forthcoming integration of further brands Tesla its position as a leading provider of charging infrastructure. This is an important step towards promoting the interoperability in the market for electric vehicles.
