When Tesla introduced its Supercharger network in 2012, charging was free for Tesla owners. Later, Tesla began charging for recharging at its own charging stations. Because the Supercharger network was exclusive to Tesla vehicles, charging energy could be easily billed through each vehicle's stored account. In recent months, however, Tesla has opened up its Supercharger network to electric vehicles from other manufacturers. Most recently, it was announced that the NACS (Tesla Standard) plug will become the standard for many electric vehicles in America. In addition, many markets are beginning to mandate payment systems at charging stations. Tesla has resisted this for some time, but the latest evidence suggests that the company is now introducing a payment system for its Supercharger stations.
Back in March, word leaked out that Tesla may forgo a large portion of California's subsidies, which is almost a first for Tesla. In California, Tesla had applied for $6 million in subsidies for four large Supercharger stations with 420 charging points. Behind the funding was the California Energy Commission's Clean Transportation Program Rural Electric Vehicle Charging Program. Now it has been revealed that Tesla is foregoing the $6 million in funding because it does not want to meet the "payment infrastructure requirements." But that could soon change.
As has been seen sporadically, Tesla has begun installing the latest Supercharger generation V4. Apart from a changed design and a slightly longer cable, there do not seem to have been any serious changes to the V4 Superchargers installed so far. Internally, however, Tesla seems to be thinking about possible future changes to the latest generation, because at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood, UK, Tesla was represented with a booth and also displayed one of its V4 columns there. A visitor to the Tesla Owner UK Club took a closer look at the Supercharger on display there and discovered that there was apparently a card reader hidden under the cable holder that had recently been attached to the outside. The latest generation (V4) is also being installed at the new Supercharger location in Graz - Austria. As a first video of the Tesla Club Austria on Twitter shows.
