A new video from China shows for the first time Tesla's upcoming affordable version of the Model Y – internally known by the codename E41. Instead of a completely new model, Tesla apparently relies on a heavily stripped-down version of its bestseller. Goal: a more affordable Model Y for under 35,000 US dollars – without sacrificing size and range.
Exterior: Less glass, less frills
The most noticeable change is the omission of the panoramic glass roof. Instead, there is a fixed, painted roof – a first for Tesla. The continuous light strip at the rear has also been removed and replaced with conventional brake lights. Further simplifications:
-
No matrix headlights, no front light strip
-
Simpler taillights and bumpers
-
No trailer hitch connection
-
Bumper camera remains – good for FSD and Autopilot
Despite the changes, the wheelbase seems to remain the same – space and trunk should therefore be similar to the current Model Y.
Interior: Basic equipment focusing on essentials
Internally, Tesla has also made cuts. The new model apparently relies on the following changes:
-
Textile seats instead of vegan leather
-
No ventilated or heated seats
-
No rear display
-
Significantly fewer speakers (presumably 10 instead of 15)
-
Simplified interior trim without Alcantara
-
New two-part concept of the center console, similar to the Cybertruck
-
No clothes hooks or luggage cover

Strategy: Tesla focuses on production efficiency instead of a new model
Instead of developing a completely new vehicle, Tesla uses its existing Model Y platform – thus saving R&D costs, production time, and scaling risks. This strategy is similar to that of the slimmed-down Model 3 from Mexico but goes a step further with the Model Y: Compromises in comfort and design – but same space, same technology.
Elon Musk said on the Q2 Earnings Call: „It’s just a Model Y.“ – and that seems to be exactly what it is.
Conclusion: Less luxury, more Tesla for less money
Anyone wishing for a Model Y with the smallest possible price tag might find it here. While features like a glass roof, seat heating, or surround sound are missing – the basic package remains: a fully electric, spacious Tesla SUV with FSD capability and robust technology.
An entry price of under 35,000 US dollars (probably around 39,000 € in Europe) without environmental bonus would be a strong step towards mass suitability.
Whether you prefer to wait for a model with full equipment – or want to enter cheaply now – is up to you. But it is clear: this Model Y could be the entry into the Tesla world for many.
