Tesla launches FSD transfer program now also in Europe and the Middle East

Tesla has launched the popular FSD transfer program (Full Self-Driving) outside of North America for the first time. Customers in Europe and the Middle East can now transfer their existing FSD license to a new vehicle without having to purchase the package again.

What is the FSD transfer?

Until now, this option was exclusively available in North America and was often used as a sales incentive towards the end of the quarter. Tesla now also allows European and Middle Eastern customers to take their paid FSD license with them for free when purchasing a new vehicle.

This is how the transfer works:

  • Do not select an FSD package during the order

  • Instead, inform the Tesla advisor that the existing FSD license should be transferred

  • On the day of delivery, FSD will be deactivated on the old vehicle and activated on the new one

  • The old Tesla does not need to be traded in or sold

The original vehicle will lose all FSD functions and, depending on the purchase date, will only be equipped with the basic autopilot.

Why not worldwide?

Elon Musk recently hinted on X (formerly Twitter) that the FSD transfer should also be offered in Europe – shortly thereafter, it was implemented. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, or China have not yet been considered. Presumably, Tesla is initially focusing on markets where FSD is not yet active or regulatory hurdles exist.

However, a global expansion of this offer is likely.

Benefits for Tesla customers

The introduction of the FSD transfer outside of North America is a strong signal to loyal customers who have already spent several thousand euros on FSD – often without being able to use it comprehensively so far. Thanks to the transfer, they can switch to a new model with more modern hardware (HW4) without having to pay again.

When will FSD come to Europe?

The full introduction of FSD in Europe still depends on regulatory approvals. Currently, Tesla is in close contact with the Dutch authorities, who are leading the EU approval process. Elon Musk recently expressed confidence that approval could occur in the current quarter or by the end of the year at the latest.

Conclusion

With the start of the FSD transfer in Europe and the Middle East, Tesla is taking an important step towards customer retention and trust. Even though the full introduction of FSD is still pending, the company is already creating tangible benefits for long-term owners and buyers of new vehicles.
