Do you want to know the performance of your Tesla battery? The battery health test in the vehicle provides precise insights into the current condition and degradation of your battery. In this guide, we show you how to start the test, what the requirements are, and how to correctly interpret the results.
What does battery health and degradation mean?
Your battery loses capacity over time – this is completely normal. Battery health describes how much percentage of the original energy amount is still usable. A battery with 85% health provides 85% of the range compared to its new condition.
Typical degradation course
-
First months: 1–3% loss due to BMS calibration and initial cycles
-
Long term: About 15% capacity loss per 200,000 miles
-
Factors: Charge cycles, SoC time at very high or low charge states
Tesla's Battery and Drivetrain Warranty
Tesla guarantees that your battery retains at least 70% of the original capacity within the warranty period. The conditions:
-
Model S/X/Cybertruck: 8 years or 150,000 miles
-
Model 3/Y RWD: 8 years or 100,000 miles
-
Other 3/Y: 8 years or 120,000 miles
If the health falls below 70%, Tesla will replace the pack free of charge.
Step-by-step to the battery health test
Navigate in the vehicle to Controls > Service > Battery Health to start the test.
Requirements
-
Vehicle in Park
-
State of Charge ≤ 20%
-
Connected to the Internet
-
No pending updates or warnings
-
AC charging station (≥ 5 kW) connected
Procedure and Duration
-
Confirm test requirements
-
Vehicle discharges via engine and heating to near 0%
-
Automatic charging to 100%
-
Test duration: Depending on battery size and charging power, up to 18 hours.
During discharging, the ventilation runs loudly – this is normal.
Correctly Interpret Results
After completion, you will receive an app notification. Under Service > Battery Health, you can see the new health percentage. Typical values: 80–90%. If the value drops below 70%, contact Tesla for a replacement.
Tips After the Test
-
Plan a short drive immediately or use the air conditioning to lower the charge level to your usual limit (e.g., 90%).
-
Conduct the test a maximum of twice a year.
Test Limits and Maintenance Instructions
-
The health test discharges the battery almost completely – use it sparingly.
-
Tesla allows only one test every 6 months without Service Mode.
-
After the test, the BMS calibrates your range display more accurately.
